Could Your Gut Be Fueling Your Fatigue? Understanding Lipopolysaccharides (LPS)

If you've been struggling with chronic fatigue, you've probably already had your iron, thyroid, vitamin B12, or vitamin D levels checked. While these are all important pieces of the puzzle, there's another potential contributor that many people have never heard of: 

Lipopolysaccharides are molecules found on the outer surface of certain bacteria that naturally live in our digestive tract. While a normal part of certain gut bacteria;  when they enter the bloodstream in excess they may contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation that has been linked to fatigue, brain fog, and other persistent symptoms.

Even small amounts can activate the immune system and trigger the release of inflammatory chemicals called cytokines.

Inflammatory cytokines can also affect the brain, altering neurotransmitters, sleep regulation, and energy production. Rather than feeling energized after rest, many people feel as though their "battery never fully recharges." 

The good news is that the intestinal lining is dynamic and constantly renewing itself. Supporting gut health may help reduce unnecessary immune activation.

Depending on the individual, this may include:

Eating More Fibre- Aim for approximately 30–35 grams of fibre daily 

Supporting Microbial Diversity- A diet rich in colourful plant foods provides nutrients for a diverse microbiome. 

Identifying Underlying Digestive Issues- When appropriate, further investigation for conditions such as SIBO, dysbiosis, inflammatory bowel disease, or celiac disease may be warranted. 

Reducing Chronic Inflammation- Supporting healthy sleep, managing stress, engaging in regular physical activity, and following an anti-inflammatory dietary pattern all contribute to a healthier gut environment.
